Sligo Mountaineering Club was formed in 1974 by a group of local people who were eager to take advantage of the beautiful hills and scarp-lands of Sligo and North Leitrim.
Over the past 35 years the club has grown in strength and has now over 100 members.
From September to June, the club meets EVERY Sunday and has a variety of long and medium distance walks each month.
Club Sunday is first Sunday of each month. It’s a 3-4 hour walk designed for those who want to explore our mountains at a more leisurely pace. Ideal for meeting and talking to Club members, who’ll answer any question you have about Sligo Mountaineering Club.
The Northwest of Ireland is becoming ever more popular with tourists. Over the past five years there has been close to 1 million visitors to the region. Newer walking trails have been opening up in the area (e.g. The “Sligo Way” and The “Miners Way” at Arigna). These, along with the more established routes as the ‘Leitrim and Western Ways’ help ensure interest in the area has never been greater.
Sligo Mountaineering Club facilitates any prospective walker, regardless of age or experience, to enjoy our landscape – that is rich in history, unparalleled in beauty and diverse enough to suit all abilities.
Club Ethos
The Sligo Mountaineering Club is dedicated to walking in high mountain areas, in conditions that can sometimes be extreme. Therefore the club encourages its members to acquire navigation and survival skills to help them enjoy this activity in safety. All members should look after themselves and other walkers on the hills, and ensure their own safety and that of others.
